Jujutsu Kaisen: Mastering Character Development

Jujutsu Kaisen: Mastering Character Development

Jujutsu Kaisen, launched in March 2018 in The Weekly Shōnen Jump Magazine, has undeniably left an indelible mark in the manga and anime world. The numbers speak for themselves, with a weekly manga series, a successful anime adaptation, and a feature film. While the series employs many familiar plot points and story-building techniques, I argue that its true strength lies in character development.

I began reading Jujutsu Kaisen around early 2019, though the fluidity of time makes the exact date somewhat elusive. Nevertheless, what stands out to me about this series is its exceptional approach to character-building.

Consider the feature film, which deviated from the typical focus on the main protagonist. Instead, it centered around a character we only vaguely knew from the manga - Yuta. In the initial one-shot, JJK 0, Yuta held the main role, a fact that showcases the series' commitment to character exploration. This choice demonstrates a willingness to delve into the depths of characters beyond the primary narrative, offering audiences a richer experience.

Throughout the series, the narrative progression occasionally pauses to spotlight individual characters. Noteworthy instances include Maki, Nanami, Kinji, and Hiromi. These moments of character-building foster a deeper connection between the audience and these seemingly 'side characters.' The evidence is in the fans' expressions of admiration, such as the murals dedicated to Nanami and Gojo. Even characters like Nobara, with her captivating development, leave readers yearning for a more profound understanding of her background.

As Jujutsu Kaisen approaches its final chapters, it's clear that the series could potentially branch out into individual character stories after its conclusion. The groundwork laid through character-building offers an opportunity for spin-offs, allowing fans to explore the captivating backstories of characters like Sukuna or to unravel the mysteries surrounding individuals like Kinji Hakari.

In essence, Jujutsu Kaisen is not merely a character-centered story; it is a characters-built narrative. The ability to let the lead character take a backseat for an entire arc while the series continues to thrive is a testament to the richness of the characters' stories. The success of Jujutsu Kaisen lies not just in its innovative concept but in the masterful crafting of its characters, making it a standout title in the realm of manga and anime.
